Explainable AI (XAI)

AI systems designed so humans can understand how decisions are made.

👩‍🏫 How to Explain by Age Group

  • Elementary (K–5)

    • Explainable AI means the computer can show us how it got its answer. It’s like showing your work on a math problem instead of just writing the answer.

  • Middle School (6–8)

    • Sometimes AI gives answers, but we don’t know why. Explainable AI helps us see the steps it took, kind of like a student writing out how they solved a tough question.

  • High School (9–12)

    • "Explainable AI (XAI) is a field focused on making AI decisions transparent and understandable to humans. It’s critical in high-stakes areas like healthcare and education, where trust and accountability matter.

🚀 Classroom Expeditions

Mini-journeys into AI thinking.

  • Elementary (K–5)

    • Give students a math problem and ask them to “show their work.” Then ask, “What if a computer gave us the answer, should it show its work too?”

  • Middle School (6–8)

    • Use a simple logic puzzle and have students list their steps to solve it. Then compare this to how AI might explain its own thinking.

  • High School (9–12)

    • Assign students to review a decision made by an AI model (using a demo tool or case study) and write a short summary of how explainable it is.
