Explainable AI (XAI)

AI systems designed so humans can understand how decisions are made.

Help me explain to...

K–5th
Explainable AI means the computer can show us how it got its answer. It’s like showing your work on a math problem instead of just writing the answer.

6–8th
Sometimes AI gives answers, but we don’t know why. Explainable AI helps us see the steps it took, kind of like a student writing out how they solved a tough question.

9–12th
Explainable AI (XAI) is a field focused on making AI decisions transparent and understandable to humans. It’s critical in high-stakes areas like healthcare and education, where trust and accountability matter.

Expeditions

K–5th
Give students a math problem and ask them to “show their work.” Then ask, “What if a computer gave us the answer, should it show its work too?”

6–8th
Use a simple logic puzzle and have students list their steps to solve it. Then compare this to how AI might explain its own thinking.

9–12th
Assign students to review a decision made by an AI model (using a demo tool or case study) and write a short summary of how explainable it is.
