Labeling

Assigning categories or identifiers to data so an AI can learn patterns.

Help me explain to...

K–5th
Labeling is like putting name tags on pictures or words so the computer can learn what each one is.

6–8th
When we label data, we tell the AI what it’s looking at, like saying “this is a dog” or “this is a happy sentence.” It needs lots of labels to learn patterns.

9–12th
Labeling is a key step in supervised learning. By attaching tags to data (like "positive review" or "cat image"), AI models learn to generalize and make accurate predictions.

Expeditions

K–5th
Give students a pile of stickers or images and have them sort and label them. Then explain that AI needs people to do this to learn.

6–8th
Create a mini dataset from classroom objects or text examples. Have students label each one and compare results. Show how labeling consistency matters.

9–12th
Have students label social media posts or survey responses by sentiment. Discuss how this labeling could affect how an AI moderates or recommends content.
